Sitting all day can also <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicaldaily.com\/sitting-new-smoking-workday-inactivity-could-offset-any-benefits-exercise-248119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offset any benefits of exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since our bodies are not designed to accommodate a position that diminishes blood flow to our legs and feet and contorts our spine. Sitting is bad for you, but what are you going to do if your job requires you to sit behind a desk all day?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Enter the Treadmill Desk<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treadmill desks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are usually treadmills with less powerful motors than traditional ones and go at a steady pace of about 2 miles per hour, the manufacturer\u2019s recommended speed. If you want to move faster, they go up to a maximum of 4 mph. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People either <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/my-life-with-a-treadmill-desk-e-mail-and-browsing-at-2-mph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/catherine-pearson\/my-workday-on-the-treadmill-desk-catherine-pearson_b_918871.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treadmill desks; there\u2019s no middle ground. Some people swear by them and find them effective, while others find them to be a waste of time and money. After all, they retail anywhere from $700 &#8211; $4,000. That can be a big expense for most small companies. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Are Treadmill Desks Effective?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can be, but it depends on the user\u2019s level of fitness. A University of Oregon <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/ua\/ncs\/archives\/2015\/feb\/treadmill-desks-offer-limited-benefits-pose-challenges-workplace-study-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that in a real office setting, it wasn&#8217;t very effective, especially if it\u2019s used as your only physical activity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the study, \u201cthe physical activity was small and did not help workers meet public health guidelines for daily exercise\u201d. There were also logistical challenges, including the high cost, that make the program unfeasible for many companies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in reality, to attain the moderate to vigorous physical activity <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physicalactivity\/basics\/adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benchmark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 30 minutes a day to stay healthy, most people would need to be exercising outside of the office or up the speed setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Alternatives to the Treadmill Desk<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the Treadmill desk was created, there was the standing desk. Standing desks work great and they\u2019re a good way to keep the blood flowing while working. You can also move around a lot while standing, doing occasional stretching exercises or walking around. But <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spending the whole day standing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be just as harmful as sitting all day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best things to do is to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicaldaily.com\/sitting-new-smoking-workday-inactivity-could-offset-any-benefits-exercise-248119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take breaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the day. Occasional stretches or walks around the office can increase blood flow to the legs and reinvigorate your muscles enough to spike your metabolism. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Should you buy a Treadmill Desk?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Treadmill Desks are a novel idea and could work in the right setting, the benefits don&#8217;t necessarily justify the cost, unless you have a lot of money to burn.
